How is Breastmilk Jewelry Made?

If you’ve ever come across breastmilk jewelry, your first question is probably:
“How in the world do you turn breastmilk into jewelry?”
It sounds almost impossible, doesn’t it?
The truth is, creating breastmilk jewelry is a delicate combination of science, artistry, and preservation. While every artist has their own unique techniques and trade secrets, the goal is always the same: to transform such a special piece of your motherhood journey into a beautiful keepsake that can be treasured for years to come.
At Roselynn & Rayne, I have had the incredible honor of creating breastmilk jewelry for hundreds of mothers across Illinois and throughout the United States. Every piece tells a different story, and every drop of milk represents countless moments of love, sacrifice, and connection.
Here’s a look at how the process works.
Step 1: Send or Drop Off Your Breastmilk
The first step is providing a small sample of your breastmilk.
The good news? You don’t need very much.
Only 10–15 mL (about half an ounce) is needed to create your keepsake. This is enough to make about 6-8 pieces in total.
Fresh or frozen breastmilk can both be used. If you’re shipping your milk, simply thaw it to room temperature before packaging it. If you’re local to Oswego, Illinois, you’re welcome to drop it off in person.
Many moms are surprised to learn they can even use milk that’s been frozen for months—or sometimes even years. Yes even that 10 year old milk you found at the bottom of your deep freezer is good to use for your keepsake. It is no longer okay for consumption but that is not what we are using it for anyway!
Step 2: Your Breastmilk Is Carefully Preserved
Once your breastmilk arrives safely, it goes through a specialized preservation process.
This is the most important step.
The preservation process removes moisture from the milk and stabilizes it so it can be transformed into a lasting keepsake instead of something that would naturally spoil over time.
Every artist has their own preservation method, developed through years of testing and experience. While the exact process is proprietary, the goal is to create a durable material that will remain beautiful for years with proper care.
Step 3: The Breastmilk Becomes a Keepsake Stone
After the milk has been carefully preserved, it is carefully formed into the center stone of your jewelry.
This stone becomes the heart of your keepsake.
Your breastmilk can be paired with beautiful crushed opals, colorful shimmer, birthstones, or other meaningful inclusions that make your piece completely unique.
No two stones are ever exactly alike—just like every breastfeeding journey is different.
Step 4: Your Jewelry Is Handcrafted
Once your keepsake stone has cured, it is carefully set into the jewelry you’ve selected.
Whether you’ve chosen a ring, necklace, earrings, bracelet, or another keepsake, every piece is assembled by hand with close attention to detail.
Because every order is individually handcrafted, no two pieces are ever identical.
Step 5: Your Keepsake Comes Home
Before your jewelry is shipped, every piece is carefully inspected to ensure it meets my quality standards. A photo is then sent to you and once you give the okay, it's time for your keepsake to go home!
It’s beautifully packaged and sent home to you—a lasting reminder of one of the most meaningful seasons of motherhood. We do also schedule local pick up in case you're local to Oswego, Illinois in case you don't feel comfortable having it shipped in the mail.
For many moms, opening that package is an emotional moment. It’s not just jewelry.
It’s the late-night feedings.
The endless pumping sessions.
The sleepy newborn cuddles.
The first smiles.
The comfort only you could provide.
It’s a chapter of motherhood you can carry with you forever.
Does Breastmilk Jewelry Really Last?
One of the biggest concerns moms have is whether breastmilk jewelry will hold up over time.
When properly preserved and cared for, breastmilk jewelry is designed to be a lasting keepsake.
Like any fine jewelry, it’s important to avoid harsh chemicals, prolonged exposure to water and the sun. Following the care instructions provided with your keepsake will help preserve its beauty for years to come.
I will say though, I out my personal keepsake jewelry through all of the wear and tear to ensure you are all getting the absolute best quality. I wear my jewelry in the shower, swimming, in the sun, cooking, etc. My breastmilk ring is a little over 4 years old and it still looks brand new.
However, I will always recommend to follow the care instructions anyway! It is important to care for the things that mean so much to us after all.

Why Mothers Choose Breastmilk Jewelry
Breastfeeding is one of the most demanding—and rewarding—journeys a mother can experience.
Whether you breastfed for a couple weeks, several months, or multiple years, every journey deserves to be celebrated.
Breastmilk jewelry isn’t about preserving milk.
It’s about preserving everything that milk represents.
The sacrifices.
The strength.
The bond.
The countless hours spent nourishing your baby.
The season that somehow feels endless while you’re living it—but is gone before you know it.
